How to Know When You Need Professional Help with Interview Prep
Over the last few years that I’ve spent working with professionals of every age, every demographic, and different levels from several different industries, one thing has become crystal clear to me: even the smartest, most competent, highly skilled, and incredibly qualified candidates do not feel comfortable talking about themselves.
It’s time to understand exactly why winging it isn’t going to cut it, especially when there’s so much on the line.
WHY “WINGING IT” IN A JOB SEARCH (AND IN LIFE!) WILL NOT WORK
Now, more than ever, the market is competitive. The stakes are at an all-time high for jobs, meaning you not only need to be highly skilled and come with specific credentials – but you also need to communicate why YOU are the perfect fit.
If someone came to you and said “I need you to tell me all about the history of Facebook and, if you get everything right, you’ll win $100,000 – do you want to answer now or prepare first?” wouldn’t the clear choice be to prepare first?
Whether you have an upcoming job interview, or if you’re just beginning the search for a new job, it’s important that you’re investing the time and energy on the right things – strategically preparing for networking events and nailing your interviews should not be excluded.
FINDING THE RIGHT TYPE OF SUPPORT FOR YOU
A few weeks ago we published a blog about when to say YES and when to say NO to certain things. This blog went largely viral across many different social media platforms because we all have that one small thing in common: everyone is strapped for time. Everyone is busy. Everyone is being pushed and pulled in a hundred different directions. However, knowing when to say no will help you ensure that you’re making decisions with the right intentions and strategy in place. These decisions will ultimately lead you to the right things that you should invest your professional time into.
To take things one step further than that blog, I am here to give you one more piece of the career puzzle: investing in yourself will help you achieve ultimate career success. And that means wisely investing the time, or resources, it takes to totally prepare you rock in your career.
GETTING BACK TO BASICS: WHY INTERVIEW PREP IS SO CRITICAL
For some people, getting interview prep done the right way means spending time by themselves, introspecting about their goals and skills, and practicing responses to common questions.
For others, working with a professional (like me!) to suss out what types of jobs they should be going for, how to showcase their transferable skills, and learning how to best market yourself by clearly articulating their skills during an interview is the best option. This is especially true if you’re entering the workforce for the first time, you are looking to uplevel your career (and if you want that increase in salary!), or if you’re looking to make a career pivot.
And, in some cases, people can benefit from both types of help. In the course I will be launching in a few weeks, you’ll be able to get the best of both worlds by being able to work through an interview prep course on your own time while taking advantage of the guided learning and expertise offered by taking a course built by a professional – me!
To find the best method for you, I’ve put together a downloadable checklist to help you narrow when whether or not you should be working with a professional to get your interview prep done right.
And don’t forget to keep an eye out for the course itself, since it’ll be launching in November!
