Improving Your Focus in Just FOUR Steps
If you’re on a personal journey to elevate your career and live your best life, finding a way to effortlessly channel all of your ambitions and energy can be tricky to balance.
For me, it used to be very difficult to clear my mind, know what to do next, and actually commit to my mapped out plan.
Part of this means that you’ll need to retrain your mind to avoid procrastination, exercise self-control, build accountability, and FOCUS on what needs to get done.
So in this blog, we’ll take a deep dive into how you can stay focused in FOUR specific steps.
THE FOUR STEPS YOU’LL NEED TO TAKE TO IMPROVE YOUR FOCUS
Being able to maintain complete focus is not something that the majority of people just wake up with. It is a developed SKILL that takes commitment and conscious effort, and something that most people have to work on.
So, here are four steps that I have found to be the most helpful in my own endeavors as well as my clients!
When it comes to building your focus, it’s all about the Four D’s:
DECLARE
DELEGATE
DROP
DO
Let’s break down each of these four steps:
Step 1: Declare Your Intentions
When it comes to becoming more focused and improving your productivity, Step 1 is all about declaring your intentions and building clarity around what you want to focus on. This will also allow people to know what to expect from you and help keep you accountable.
More importantly, it will help YOU know exactly what needs to be done. From there you will no longer struggle with being able to commit to something or over-commit to a project. You will immediately know what exactly your priorities and intentions are for this season/phase in your life.
Step 2: Delegate What’s Left
Face the facts: It is impossible to-do-all-of-the-things. So, what are we left to do? Delegate!
When leveling up our careers and our lives, we cannot be afraid of reaching out and asking for support. Asking for help or assigning out tasks that will help get projects completed is critical to lasting success in your career.
If part of a project, or entire task, isn’t in your lane, delegate it out! A huge part of being focused, purposeful, and productive is stepping away from things that you shouldn’t really be spending time on.
My rule of thumb: Focus on your strengths, delegate out all of your weaknesses. For me, technology and managing my websites is just not my thing. Instead of spending 20-30 hours working on a glitch, I delegate this out to someone on my team - THEY are the experts. And instead of me working on something that will undoubtedly drive me insane, I have someone else do it. It is worth the hassle every.single.time. I promise!
My motto: Time is much more valuable than money because you can use your time to make money, but you can't use money to purchase more time.
Step 3: Drop the Distractions
Once you’re getting ready to buckle down and #WORK, make sure to DROP everything that does not strategically align with your intentions and create crystal clear boundaries.
That means setting your phone to silent, committing to not checking your social media, and having that block of time set aside to getting sh*t done! This also means you might need to say no to a weekend trip or baking homemade school cookies for your kids school (speaking from experience only !).
Part of your process should always be prioritizing what’s most important. When the time comes to be super LASER-FOCUSED, keep a priority list going and build accountability around this.
Step 4: JUST DO IT
Okay – you get the jist with this one…
The final step to improving your focus is actually EXERCISING your focus muscles. You’ve already declared, delegated, and dropped everything you need to, so now it’s time to follow the famous words of Brittany Spears and “you better work, b*tch!”
Think about how nice it’d feel to get that item off your list and how much you’ll love kicking back in the evening knowing that nothing is weighing heavy on your mind when it comes to work.
So, if you want to improve your focus and TRULY tap into your productivity, remember to DECLARE, DELEGATE, DROP, and DO! 💪
