5 Steps on How to Beat Self Doubt
Beating yourself up over things that we may or may not have control over is like putting ice cream in front of a 2-year-old and telling her that she is not allowed to eat it – it is inevitable madness will happen. As a high achiever myself, as well as someone who loves setting ambitious goals, I understand the negative thoughts that may stream through your head as you navigate your career journey. Especially in today’s competitive career ecosystem, controlling your thoughts, especially the negative ones, are critical for thriving inside your career.
Here are 5 tips on how to conquer self-doubt, and allow more positive thoughts to flow through your head:
1. Celebrate Self- Awareness
When you begin to have these self-doubting feelings, celebrate your awareness towards them. Prior to breaking any habit, you need to be aware that you HAVE the habit. I know it may sound weird to celebrate a negative feeling, but focus on being aware of the feeling first.
2. Write Them Down
When you begin to have these negative thoughts, write down the feelings you are having immediately.
Review what you wrote down later in the day or the next day, and ask yourself are these self-doubting statements FACTS (is there data to back them up) or are they just thoughts that are running through my head?
Thoughts are normal to have, but might not be TRUTHFUL. You need to filter out the difference between the TRUTH and THOUGHTS.
3. Challenge Your Beliefs
Get in the habit of writing all of your thoughts down. Challenge yourself with real-life DATA (aka FACTS) and show yourself that you are most likely having these negative doubts because an old habit you might have created.
CHALLENGE yourself with REAL truthful data.
If your negative thoughtful IS truthful, what will you change in your life to get a different result?
4. Make an anti-self-doubt jar
Have a physical jar full of past accomplishments, achievements, goals met, accolades, and anything that has previously brought you significant amount of joy (write them on paper and put them in there one-by-one).
When you are having a moment of self-doubt, pull some of those accomplishments out.
This is DATA (aka proof!) that you ARE valued, credible, awesome, and can achieve anything you put your heart into.
5. Get Support
If you cannot kick these negative self-doubting feelings on your own, REACH OUT for support.
Sometimes you need someone else to provide you with non-biased, objective, support.
