The Great Resignation is Here

Whether you call it the Great Resignation, the big quit, or the turnover tsunami, a lot of people are leaving (or at least thinking about leaving) their jobs.

A study by Microsoft found that 41% of the global workforce would consider leaving their current employer within the next year.

And, just last week, I started to feel this shift too.

I had nine clients reach out to me for interview prep over a 2-day span. That is much higher than my typical 1-2 clients per day work.

The Great Resignation is propelled by three forces:

1. The changing generation – different expectations and different needs, goals, and desires

2. The economic crisis brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic

3. And, the realization people have had that they can have a different social contract, spending more time with family when they work remote and skip the commute.

During the pandemic we saw one of the best retention rates because people didn’t want to leave.

They needed the security, ease, safety, & craved simplicity in the chaotic world.

Now, we’re at the opposite end of the pendulum.

With a stable, strong employee-driven job market, people are ready to leave and go where they can make more money, get better benefits, and find flexibility.

We’ve gone from one extreme to another.

Moral of the story: You've got to keep up with what is going on around you, and not turn a blind eye to it.

Do not take a passive stance in this era.

Be nimble in defining success, and get creative about turning your strengths into money making tools!

This is critical not only to our career ecosystem, but, also, to continuously create the impact & outcomes in your career that you desire.
