Beating Decision Fatigue (aka how to confidently make a decision!)
Beating Decision Fatigue (aka how to confidently make a decision!)
It is a blessing and a curse to be faced with multiple decisions. Many would say you are “lucky” to have the opportunity to make decisions that you do, but receiving these ambiguous statements may minimize the difficulty of actually committing to a decision.
One example that my client, Jena, faced this week was which new role should she accept. One with a small startup company which was a lateral move (less $$$ too) or one with a large health plan that was backed by Jeff Bezos himself (VP title, more $$, more stock options, etc.).
What got her stuck in between either role? Family time.
She was nervous that if she chose the VP position, she would miss out on her time with her kids & husband... she had a really tricky decision to make!!
This is very understandable, so we focused on objectively looking at her choices, and by the end of the 45-min chat, she was confident that the VP role was her best decision - not only for her, but for her family too. Jena, you rock!!!
When you are faced with a big decision to make, it is important to OBJECTIVELY look at all of your choices.
3 examples of how NOT to make a decision:
React: Wing it - Make the quickest & "easiest" decision and move on.
Pause, Then Respond by Subjectively looking at your choices
Move on: Without making a decision - not making a decision is still a decision.
Questions to ask yourself when you are making a challenging decision:
What do I need right now? Do I need water, do I need carbs, or do I need to take a shower?
How is staying stuck serving you? What is holding you back from making the decision?
Have I objectively weighed out the pros/cons? Am I being objective or subjective about this decision?
Who can I reach out to that will help me make this decision, objectively? (call Ashlee!)
Which decision is a win-win situation? What is the WORST that happens?
