Why annual goal setting does not work.

As evidence from the 2020 pandemic year + supporting hundreds of clients in achieving their own personal goals + being a working parent & juggling all-of-the-things, I am not convinced that annual goal setting is a powerful tool in defining success.

In fact, statistics show that people who create goals around New Years have positive intentions, however without a roadmap on how to achieve the goal, most people give up on their NYE goals by week 2-3 of January!

And…. as I was reviewing my 2020 planning workshop videos from December 2019, it became crystal clear to me (even as the instructor) as to why carving out 1-2 hours in mid-December is very strategic & purposeful for your to achieve success and happiness the following year.

Why I do not believe in annual goal setting:

  • Creating a goal and leaving it as just a goal to achieve is too vague. Setting up a goal does not give you any insight on how to achieve the goal. There is no roadmap for success.

  • What will happen when you are unable to achieve the goal? Do you have a backup plan or is this how you define failure?

  • What will happen when you do achieve the goal? What comes next? How do you know what positive or negative habits to keep from that goal?
